Post-Induction Wow
For a period things seem to move very slowly in the PCANZ and then it is all go. The first week and two days have flown by. New faces to put names to, how does the photocopier work, who do I have to talk to when a decision is needed, a Rest Home Service, a Finance and Property Committee meeting, two church council meetings. Everyone is so understanding as I seek to make sense of the blur of activity.

It is good to be here among you. Gillian and I feel most welcome. We especially appreciated the opportunities to worship with four communities on our first Sunday. Well, Gillian says I only really worshipped with three congregations because I snuck out of B@tch early to fulfil responsibilities with Highate@10. In the afternoon we joined with others around the Lord‘s Table in a celebration of Communion in the Roslyn Church, and again that evening with a Youth Service in which the youth and the recycled youth shared lead-ership roles. We are a community who seek to live worshipfully.

We will make the most of a modest beginning before I depart for Study Leave on 23rd September. The focus of the Study Leave is the writing of an essay on the history of the theology and practice of ordination in the PCANZ (1900-2010). A special interest that I want to explore is how our theology and practice may differ when compared with the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and the United Reformed Church in England. Here is a thought and a few questions which have arisen as I‘ve prepared for the Study Leave. By our baptism we each are called to exercise a vocation as followers of Jesus. So what do we understand we are doing when we ordain elders? What makes the act of ordaining an elder different to commissioning a youth leader? Is there a difference? Why is a presbytery involved in the selection of elders who will teach and preside at the sacraments, but not those who rule as spiritual leaders in a parish? Perhaps you have some other questions, not necessarily related to ordination, which we might explore together next year in a study on Vocation.

Film and Faith Meeting in September
Wednesday 8 September, at Kevin Ward‘s home, 392 Highgate at 7.15. The film will be the Swedish film, As It Is In Heaven. This is a superb, inspiring film!

Akany Avoko, Madagascar Update.
The latest report on the last year‘s activities and progress at Akany is avail-able on line on the church‘s website. A hardcopy is on the notice board in the church foyer.
Dawn Ibottson, well known for her pressed flower cards has donated packs of cards for sale for Akany Avoko funds. These are available in the church foyer.

Highgate Environmental Group
This Environmental Discussion Group meets again on Monday September 6 at the Paulin‘s home at 47 Ross Street from 7.30-9pm. The Group will begin discussion on Gareth Morgan‘s book ―Poles Apart— beyond the shouting who’s right about climate change.?”
The group has never been the same twice so newcomers are invited to come and add a perspective to this challenging topic. Ignoring it and hoping it goes away will not work! Come and join us at 47 Ross Street at 7.30pm, September 4.

New Parish Clerk
After being vacant for some years the position of Parish Clerk has been filled by Netta Noone, who takes up the position this month. Netta needs no introduction and we are grateful that she is taking up this role as we know she will apply a wealth of knowledge, institutional history and wisdom to the tasks ahead.

Prayer meetings for global mission
There will be prayer meetings on the last Sunday of every month from 4.30-5.30 pm in the Maori Hill Church.
These will alternate between “in house” prayer meetings for Highgate-supported missions and the existing Dunedin-wide prayer meeting for Ser-vants.

Spring Concert by Cellists of Otago
The Cellists of Otago were started four years ago by Dr Gregory Hamilton. They are a large community choir of Otago‘s best cellists, including cellists from Southern Sinfonia, University Performing students and members of Dunedin community, now directed by Judy Davis. They enjoy performing and give freely of their time and talents, making a gift from the door takings for worthwhile causes.
SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER at 3pm in Roslyn Presbyterian Church 21 Highgate, Roslyn.
Adults $10; Students and children $5, includes afternoon tea.

MISSION CRITICAL – RHEMA BROADCASTING GROUP NEXT 20 YEARS OF CHRISTIAN RADIO AT STAKE
By October 1st this year, Rhema Broadcasting Group (RBG) must pay the NZ Government $6.4 million to renew the majority of their commercial radio frequency licences for the next 20 Years. RBG is the only multimedia organisation that exists to care for the emotional, psychological and spiritual health of all New Zealanders.
Every day, many thousands of listeners are positively impacted by RBG program-ming. The network provides programmes catering for a wide range of demo-graphic groups.
For RBG to positively impact the lives of the next generation, it’s vital that the frequency licences are secured this year.
Looking to the future, RBG is committed to continuing Christian radio coverage across the nation. ln 2010 this commitment not only requires faith, vision and strength of purpose, but also a sizeable capital investment. We need YOU to Part-ner with us to ensure that this happens.
While licences in the non-commercial category will be renewed at no charge, the bulk of RBG licences are commercial and need to be purchased from the Govern-ment.
Purchasing these licences will give us the right to broadcast in towns and cities across New Zealand for the next 20 years. 9O%, (46) of RBG commercial li-cences need renewing.
The RBG is all about ‗changing lives for good‘. Thousands of individuals have a living relationship with Jesus because by the grace of God, they get to hear mes-sages of faith, hope and love. For more lives to be positively impacted in this way, we need to ensure people remain able to hear these messages across NZ‘s airwaves well into the future.
Without frequencies RBG could be shut out of the digital future of radio, poten-tially resulting in thousands of people being unreached.
TEAR Fund’s partnership with RBG over the last 15 years has seen nearly 7,000 children sponsored, really changing lives for good. The survival of RBG is abso-lutely essential for TEAR Fund. (Executive Director of TEAR Fund)

The Kids @ Team held a community event last month that we call Starlight Story Time. We invited children and families from the wider community as an outreach and we had 150 people attend. Our theme this year was an African Jungle theme because our mission focus for this term has been raising money to support our World Vision sponsored child in Tanzania. The hall was trans-formed into a jungle with 60 trees, fairy lights, and a ―waterfall‖. The story-teller told stories from Africa and then the children went on a night trail through a darkened church with finger lights to guide them. They followed a jungle trail that took them through a cave, under a net, across a river, through a tunnel and more, finding different ―jungle‖ objects along the way. We finished with an African devotion and a supper of hot chocolate, marshmallows, animal and star shaped biscuits. Check out our photo board for more pictures.

Worship at the Three Hubs of Highgate
At Highgate Church we have different times and different services where God‘s people come together to worship. As part of the rhythms of our church we have some set times of worship.
Highgate@10—Sunday morning worship at Maori Hill Presbyterian Church, cnr Highgate/Drivers Road at 10 am. This is a Kids Friendly Church
B@tCH . Breakfast at the Coronation Hall (Balmacewen Road). Every Sun-day morning during school term time at 8.30 am. Each week, along with breakfast there is fellowship for all ages, music, singing and thinking through the Christian message of the day.
Caim—This is a midweek service every Wednesday throughout the year. Caim usually meets at Roslyn Church , 21 Highgate at 7.15 pm for a short contemplative service, which , on some occasions concludes with communion. Everyone is welcome at all these services

A  NOTE  from Patricia – last week I talked about how Jesus hit a ‘brick wall’ immediately after declaring his own God-annointed ‘to do list’ – (check out Luke 4: 14 -30  if you were absent) – the ‘wall’ was one of prejudice against his humble family background and racism – he made people so angry they tried to throw him off a cliff!  We face ‘walls’ too.  I hope you will find this prayer  worth pondering and making your own.

A prayer for the Cutting Edge – where Jesus was and still wants to be today
Heavenly Father, Our world, our community have built, permitted and bow to harsh heavy walls of prejudice, injustice, exploitation., hatred and hunger.  Some lurk in our own lives too.  Forgive us and soften us to the suffering and anguish of others.  Encourage and equip all those who work at the cutting edges where the walls are thickest and the needs greatest.

In this little corner of your world may we demonstrate our willingness to opt into Jesus’ ‘to do list’  as we fill the Christmas Boxes for Others.  May we have a loving and generous concern for those who will receive them.  May the walls of prejudice and hunger  that surround them be broken through.

Holy Spirit, empower all of us at the cutting edges of our lives.  Without you we are overwhelmed. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen

We are currently looking very closely at our buildings and whether of not they fit our mission on the Highgate. Of course this begs the question, What is our mission? I would be very happy to take any and all thoughts on this matter to the Church Council as we wrestle with this over the next few months.

This week at youth group we are putting on a service just for you! We’ve been thinking a lot about worship this term and now we want to put it into practice!

Who can come?
You, your parents, your brothers and sisters, friends, grandparents – whoever you want to invite!
However this is primarily for you! We’d love to see you there.

Why?
It’s a time to reflect, pray, be with God, or merely just to see what church is like!
Wherever you’re at, we hope you’ll come.

What?
A service which starts  at 7:30pm. It will be followed with drinks and food. YAY!

Where?
It will be held at Roslyn Church (not the hall). If you’d like to help out at the service, be there at 7.
We have a number of jobs to fill!

This replaces regular youth group this week.

Focus text for this Sunday
Hebrews 11: 29-12:2
This passage looks at the stories of people through the bible who have persevered in their faith even through hard times. Children’s faith is primarily formed through relationship with others in their own family and in the faith family. When they hear stories of others faith journeys it gives them great examples of how to live and love in God’s way.

Next Sunday August 22nd, one of the house groups is going to be taking the service. During the service the
children will be working on some combined project in the church and they will share it with the rest of the
congregation at the end. We will not be going out to the hall. We will also be sharing communion together as
an extra communion for this month.

Geoffrey Skilton is being inducted as our new minister next Sunday August 22nd 4pm. We will be sharing a pot luck dinner after this event.

We are all invited to the Induction of Reverend Geoffrey Skilton at 4pm next Sunday and the Pot Luck Meal to follow.
There will be guests at the Induction who are not members of Highgate, so please be generous with amounts, allowing for one or two others.
Finger food is easiest to serve. It can be sweet, savoury, or fruit,  home made, or bought, and we can heat it for you, or slice and put on plates.
Please put it on the set up tables in the lounge or leave in the kitchen if it’s to be heated or put on plates. You can bring it when you come to the morning service if that suits you better.

A new Senior Minister for Highgate is appointed! Our search is over.
We have a fulltime Minister to work with Jono and Barry.
Reverend Geoffrey Skilton will be inducted to the position of Senior Minister to lead the Ministry Team of the Highgate Parish.
We are indeed honoured to have Geoffrey join us. He has been with the Mornington Parish and has decided to be part of a team and with God’s call-ing in our favour he decided to accept our call. It was placed in his hands by Joan Sinclair, Presbytery Clerk of Dunedin & North Otago Presbytery.
We will welcome all our parishioners as well as the folks from Mornington who will be saying goodbye to him to join us for the service of induction and then to share a ―pot luck‖ style meal at the Maori Hill Complex.
Everyone who is interested is very welcome to this special event.

Special Thanks

Afternoon communion at Roslyn Church
Afternoon Communion will be held on 2.30pm SUNDAY 29 AUGUST 2010 At ROSLYN CHURCH, 21 HIGHGATE, to be followed by afternoon tea.
Everyone is welcome, especially those who have not been able to make it to a communion service at 10am. Transport can be provided.

Highgate Fellowship (formerly Highgate APW)
The Highgate Fellowship is meeting in Chisholm Hall at 2pm on Wed 11 Au-gust. Residents from Ross Home with their Occupational Therapist will be our guests for the afternoon. These afternoons are always a time of fun and fellow-ship to be followed by a very nice afternoon tea. If you would like to join us you would be very welcome.

Film and Faith Meeting in July
Wednesday 11 August 7.15pm at Sue Mackinlay’s place, 47 Balmacewan Road. We will be watching the film ―The Green Mile‖ about a wrongly convicted prisoner on death row. The film stars Tom Hanks and is very powerful film in which the prisoner plays an interesting role as a Christ figure? It also raises some interesting questions about crime and punishment, very relevant in the context of current debates.

Highgate Environmental Group
This Environmental Discussion Group met again at the beginning of this month for a wide ranging discussion on environmental issues. On Monday September 4 the Group will begin discussion on Gareth Morgan’s book ―Poles Apart— beyond the shouting who’s right about climate change.?‖ Copies of this book are available at the very good price of $26. Put your name on the list in the church foyer if you would like to purchase a copy or contact Gil Barbezat on 474 1315.
The group has never been the same twice so newcomers are invited to come and add a perspective to this challenging topic. Ignoring it and hoping it goes away will not work! Come and join us at 47 Ross Street at 7.30pm, September 4.

High Flyer Book Exchange
Book Swap happens every month at Chisholm Hall, Roslyn Church on the Third Thursday of each month. Come along for a browse and a chat and choose from our increasing collection of books for new ―reads‖. Next meet-ing on Thurs. 19 August — 4pm-6.pm.

Prayer meetings for global mission
There will be prayer meetings on the last Sunday of every month from 4.30-5.30 pm in the Maori Hill Church.
These will alternate between “in house” prayer meetings for Highgate-supported missions and the existing Dunedin-wide prayer meeting for Ser-vants.

Akany Avoko, Madagascar Update.
The Friends of Akany Group would like to thank everyone who has continued to sup-port this Children’s Home. Recently we have been able to send them—via Global Mis-sion—a bank transfer of more than $6,000.
This donation will be used for training of early child care workers and the salary of a specially trained Play Supervisor.

Simon, the Director of Akany writes:
“Great to hear from you and thanks to you and all our friends at the Highgate Church for your continuing support and trust. Your email (about the donation) couldn’t have come at a better time as we were in the process of considering whether to sign up for a new training programme for all childcare staff. It is relatively costly (around US$750) but covers ten childcare focused units and represents 140 hours of training. It will be delivered here at Akany Avoko which means as many of our staff as we wish can attend at no extra cost. This means that we will also be able to send some of our older girls to the same sessions– thus helping to prepare them for being mothers themselves one day.
It’s the ―Grandes Vacances‖ here at Akany Avoko so all of the kids are busy enjoying their long holidays. Pre-school classes at the childcare centre have now stopped for the duration of the holidays and so the kids are being kept entertained full-time by a com-bination of the Highgate-sponsored play supervisor and a number of our international volunteers.

I am writing to share with you the exciting news that the internationally-renowned founder and CEO of the Sojourners Community in Washington DC, Jim Wallis, will be in Dunedin on Tuesday 28 September. Jim will deliver a major lecture on faith, ethics and public life as part of a half-day conference hosted by the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, and I wanted to give you advance notice of this event and encourage you to make it known to members of your fellowship. The conference will take place at First Church, Moray Place.
Jim is a leading author, speaker and international commentator on faith and public life, and one of President Obama’s advisers on religious and ethical issues. He has written ten books, the most well-known of which, God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It, changed the US political landscape and was on the New York Times bestseller list for four months. He is in high demand internationally as a speaker, and this conference in Dunedin – his only speaking engagement on the South Island – will be a rare opportunity for us to hear him in person.

Worship at the Three Hubs of Highgate
At Highgate Church we have different times and different services where God’s people come together to worship. As part of the rhythms of our church we have some set times of worship.
Highgate@10—Sunday morning worship at Maori Hill Presbyterian Church, cnr Highgate/Drivers Road at 10 am. This is a Kids Friendly Church

B@tCH . Breakfast at the Coronation Hall (Balmacewen Road). Every Sun-day morning during school term time at 8.30 am. Each week, along with breakfast there is fellowship for all ages, music, singing and thinking through the Christian message of the day.

Caim—This is a midweek service every Wednesday throughout the year. Caim usually meets at Roslyn Church , 21 Highgate at 7.15 pm for a short contemplative service, which , on some occasions concludes with communion.
